How about an easier to pronounce version of the name that would honor Nicholas' father but make his wife more comfortable? Spiros perhaps? Or Ridon? Just thinking quickly but I bet they could come up with something acceptable. Compromise is at the heart of a marriage. Please consider this!

could you nickname him "spy"? Sometimes at work i take customer's orders over the phone. Whenever asked "what's your name" when having to do business over the phone, he will probably need to spell the name for at least half the people, but if he just went by "spy" most people would know how to spell that. plus spy is a cool name for a boy :-) It's not a bad idea to have a shorten version of the name that u can go by in everyday life so it's easier for him in situations when people need a name from him

I come from Astoria. People will learn his name. I have an unusual first name too. He might face mispronunciations and misspellings, but he will always be able to tell the story of his grandfather. Maybe Spyridon Michael Soukeras? I think he's going to be lucky to have you both as parents. Good luck!

It doesn't seem like a bad name, I think the father should get to name his son after his Dad, especially if the wife gets to choose the daughter's name. In any event Spryridon should be a part of the child's name, it could be his middle name or if Dad really needs it to be the first name and Mom can't stand it give the boy a middle name both parents like and use it as the name they call him.

I totally respect you wanting to honor your family heritage but kids are so cruel anymore. I don't know how you pronounce Spyridon but to me I see Spy Ridden. I think using it as a middle name would be great. Like someone else said if you have a boy he can choose to go by his middle name later on. I have a friend who does that. Good luck and please remember your relationship is more important than fighting over a name.

The meaning of Spyridon is noble. But I vote for Bob.

I think this name is awesome. I'm sick and tired of people naming their children something trendy. This has class and power and history.

I have a very good friend named Spirodon, who we call call Spiro. Great kid, and honestly, it's a name. It's not like the child is going to grow up "archaic" as the mother comments on the name, and it's a very unique name to be frank, so why not go with it? Plus, if it's a girl, it's going to be named after the mother's mother, so why can't the son be named after the father's father? It's fair in my personal opinion.

I am loathe to side with anyone in this debate but since he asked I feel if he is a boy then she should abide by his ethnic traditions. As for any difficulties she may have in pronouncing the name that is something that can be addressed as she becomes better versed in the english language. Is the spelling the same as it would bee in the Greek language? In looking at the names spelling and applying the phonics and usage I learned at an early age it does not appear that difficult of a name to pronounce. She has time to practice before the blessed event and he should be helping her to learn the pronunciation. God bless both parents and I pray that whatever the outcome of your naming dispute you will be blessed with a beautiful and healthy baby.
