I don't love the name but if the Dad is willing to name a girl after his wife's grandmother she should do him th e same courtesy if it's a boy

I love unique and unusal names. Being named after one's grandfather is wonderful and honorable. You could always name him Spyridon Michael to appease you both....

The child already has your surname. If you really want to play fair, you'll let the mother choose the name. Just as you say it's your "godly" right to name the child, so it is for her, as well, in Belarus. Be considerate toward your wife in her pregnancy, and don't mortify her with these futile arguments. Your baby's health is on the line here. If you'd rather go on upsetting the mother and causing your child serious harm, then be my guest, but there's nothing godly about that. Let's not confuse stubbornness for loyalty towards your family. No ancestor would ever wish to cause a fetus any harm. My husband and I argued throughout pregnancy for the very same reason. In the end, he didn't get his way or his parents', and he caused me a good deal of grief at a time when I should have enjoyed myself, grief that he couldn't take back. I certainly hope that your wife doesn't feel forced to name her child something she hates simply because some strangers feel entitled to defy a mother's wishes.

I think Spyridon Michael is perfect, then both parties win, and I do understand dad's point of view, it is an honor to his father. I named my first born "Richards" because that was my father's name and he did not have any sons. He was moved to tears and was always honored by that, and my son proudly carries that name & is grateful to have his grandfather's name live on through him. Should your child not care to go by his first name, he can always go by "Michael" - I think it is good to honor ones family and history and ethnicity, for heaven's sake, Hollywood celebrities are naming their children after fruit, so why not give your child a name that is symbolic and meaningful to your family? I say go with dad on this one.

I believe the father should have the right to name his son. Can you give him a normal middle name that he can go by if he chooses? Also, just because his legal name might be Spyridon, he can go by any nickname.

Love the name Spyridon and I respect that it is homage to paternal ancestry. American's love uncommon names, I have a very common name and it takes a constant effort to not say "what" every time I hear it. It's rather annoying. My husband also has a common and he doesn't like it either, for the same reason. Go with Spyridon, it's lovely, besides American's can't often pronounce the easiest of names so I wouldn't even let that be a factor in ruling it out.

I named my son after my pethiro and my daughter after my pethera. Middles names are my parents...couldn't fight tradition
