Ok, I may not be overtly religious. I am however very big on tradition. My own children have family names. That said, I am 45, a mom of six and I love the history and tradition behind his grandfathers name. Spyridon is strong, masculine and beautiful at the same time. To deny your husband his family tradition while being allowed to name a female child whatever you want is so very wrong on so many levels. Personally if you take that away I say he gets to name a female child Nichola after him.

I’m surprised that you would let her name the girl. Be a man and follow tradition. Name him after your father like you were probably named after your grandfather.

Oh. I see you probably also got to choose the child's Godparents, too. So, surname, first name, Godparents...what else? I hope, for the mother's sake, she finds out it's a girl, and soon. I also hope she seriously reconsiders her status within the family. It sounds as though many more such arguments will follow, and I fear you may try to bring even more than your ego, tradition, relatives, Godparents and petitioner signees into your marriage.

Spiridon the Wonderworker! Great Orthodox Saint! Spiros is a very common name and is strong and meaningful. For those who can't say it correct or know the name's history; Especially the Marathon runner Spiridon story, don't deserve to be on the mother's side. Hellenic tradition runs deep with pride… the pride and poise that birthed Western Civilization and Democracy. The mother country of Europe and the rest of the west, becons to many Greek names, including SPIRIDON! (Also spelled Spirydon). Most important of all is the mother and childs health, then the name that will be the symbol of the child's family and the child's strength.
