Nicholas: Do you want to be "right" or do you want to be happy?? I sacrificing your marriage relationship really worth the time and effort of insisting on a baby's name that your wife hates?? I thought the whole idea of "family" was to love one another with tenderness and understanding. It blows my mind that having "your way" about the name is more important to you than your wife's and families happiness. If you push this so hard then you will sink to the level of "male chauvenist pig".

Agreeing on a name for your baby is tuff. My husband and I didnt agree on any names! I had to compromise and go with what he wanted (persian names). But I do have to vote for Mr. Soukeras cuz I do think Spyridon is an awesome cool name. Micheal is common. I did grow up with uncommon name and hated it, but now that I am old I love it and wouldnt want to change it if they paid me to. Good Luck with the decision and with having your first baby.

Spyridon is a much richer name than the most common "Michael". No offense or disrespect to your wife's father, I just think that since she's getting the name she wants if it's a girl, then you should get the name you want if its a boy.

The name Spyridon is a bit out there for the US, but if it is a family name then you should name him Spyridon Michael Soukeras. Just give him a good nick name such as Ridon (Ryden).

Yes if it is a male child, the Father has the right to want to continue his heritage. Spyridon would be his proper name. As a child people would probably shorten it to Spy or something else. This woman does not respect the traditions of your country Nicholas. Would it be okay if you officially named him Spyridon but let her call him Michael? You seem to be bending over backwards for her, giving her the rights to name a female child, or even the second male child. Children are not chattels. If you are now fighting over names, what will the next fights be like what he is allowed do become when he grows up, certain occupations are permitted, others not. It seems like there are power and control issues, which should not be in a marriage. You both need to agree, sometimes one person gives in if something is really important to the other one. In this case, it is not just a name, it is your heritage, your roots and where you come from. If she cannot appreciate that, she is insulting your country and your culture. She knows how important this is to you, yet she wants to deny you this. She is selfish. If it is starting out like this now, what will the future be like trying to please her? Will she love him less if he is named Spyridon? If she says she does not want to use his name, and you give in and let her call him something else, you will regret it and resent it and resent her for making you do that, and even deny him his heritage.

Spyridon is a unique name that will assist the child in creating a unique identity for himself in the future. As someone with a unique name, I know no harm can come out of it.

Im with you. Spyridon is a great name and unique in this day and age. If you've agreed to name the baby Elena after the grandmother on the mother's side, then it's also only fair to name him Spyridon after the paternal grandfather. Good luck!

He is right, keep the culture alive. So many cool nicknames from Spyridon. And he will have a tale to tell. Spyridon Michael sounds good too, then both have it.
