How do you know the kids will rag on him? Spiro is a great name with meaning, and it is religious! Why not Spyridon Michael?? Is it because Michael is more common? Thats really mean.

It doesn't matter to me what the name of the child is and it definitely shouldn't be up to me or anyone on here, I worry though about this attitude and how it will affect your marriage.

I think he will thank his daddy also!

By the custom it would be his Fathers name first, and then if there was another boy it would be the name of her father. It is still honoring her family, but following in the tradition as well.

It doesn't matter who carried the child. It's a marriage, its not like men have a choice to carry or not to carry. For Greeks this tradition is very important, I made it clear to my son mother before we got married that there was no room for discussion on the topic of my first born.

Maybe THAT'S why Kseniya knows EXACTLY what it feels like when people cannot pronounce her name. Something her husband NICHOLAS never experienced.

My 15 year old's name is Spyridon, Spiro for short. The name is loved by all his peers and they think it is awesome. He is very popular and there has never been any negative comments and or thought of as "a joke ". Spyridon is named after a Saint (read St. SPYRIDON from Corfu". Preferable to us than naming after Michael Jackson or Jordan, although Michael is beautiful too. I signed petition because his wife wanted 100 000 signatures to be convinced and I support the beautiful name.

Or...Spyridon Michael Nicholas Soukeras. Or Michael Spyridon Nicholas Soukeras..even Nicholas Michael Spyridon Soukeras works! -.that way everyone who the parents would like to honor, is honored, yes? I mean, isn't this fairly easy to decide? And what about that democracy stuff? Really? In a marriage? One would think naming children is easier than this! lol

Everything in your comment was good except the "put her in her place" part. My son's name is Spyridon - Spiro for short and yes it is unique. Everyone remembers him, he is popular and respected by his peers and they think the name is awesome. However, be nice to his wife. :)

Put yourself in her shoes, what if it was a name you did not like and your husband is trying to control this decision with a petition. He says they "fight" about it a lot and it makes his blood boil. Yikes, he sounds scary and controlling to me. Hopefully he is a loving husband.

I must agree. I didn't like how he was insulting baby's mother's Bosnian heritage and praised his own as far more superior (a note from history, Greeks got totally crushed by Romans who in turn got crushed by barbarians. Barbarians were the germanic and slavic people...so I guess it's the Bosnians top Greeks, ha!). At the same time I do like the tradition of naming child a family name, even if it will be unfamiliar to WASPs

It is pronounced "spear i don" . My son is named Spyridon or Spiro "spear o" for short. His peers love it. Never had a problem.

What about her traditions? He married her just as much as she married him. Spyridon Michael does not work for Russian families. Russians do not have middle names, so this really no compromise for her. Michael Spyridon is more of a compromise. Father is still named and mother's wishes are still met.

Spyridon (Spear i don) is my son's name who is now 14, Spiro for short (Spear o). Never been bullied or teased. In fact he is popular for it and his peers think it is awesome . Never had a problem. Such a COOL name.
