I would never sign this

I signed the petition by mistake. Take my name off. He'll be called Spy and teased, not a good thing.

Since the two do not agree on the first name, then I think they should choose a new name that BOTH agree to. That's a pretty simple solution. If the child is a boy, the husband's grandfather's name can be the middle name; and likewise, if the child is a girl, the grandmother's name on the wife's side can be a middle name. Or whatever way they want to put the middle name. But the first name should be agreed to by both husband and wife. Read various baby books concerning names, meanings, popularity ranking, or whatever tips would help the two reach a consensus.

Please do not do this to your kid. He sounds like a dragon from Harry Potter.

Why not Spyridon Michael and use a cute nickname like Sy that is more mainstream?

your wife should slap you for wanting to saddle your baby with such a terrible name. Just because your grandfather was saddled with a horrible name, doesn't mean that you should do it to your son! The name your wife chose would be much more suitable

If you can't amicably agree on what to name a child how in the world do you ever expect to agree on how to raise any child.. I think you have bigger problems than a child's name. Sound like you need a compromise. And from a mom and grandmother who has raised 3 sons, and now has 3 granddaughters, children can be cruel any day of the week and when there is something they can use to torment someone they don't like or they think is funny they will take advantage of it every time. I have seen this many times over the past 40 years.

Let's do this fairly. Can I vote against the name somewhere? How about a counter-petition?

I have an odd name, I hated it growing up and I'm not too fond of it as an adult. In this case, I hope that mom honors dad's request. I think this name is great! The reasoning behind it, the culture if comes from and the history makes all the difference. If this was some odd no meaning name I would vote for Michael hands down. If mom should see this and read all the comments, I hope she can find it in her heart to name him Spyridon...

I grew up Baptist, married into a Greek family. My father in law is named Spiro. Out of respect I wanted to honor their first born tradition, we named our son Spyridon. He gets compliments on his name all the time. Absolutely go for it!

The fact that Putin's grandfather was named Spyridon is reason enough not to give that name to your child.

By the way my Dad didnt really like the idea naming me Spiroula after his father, but my Mum, said it was her idea she said it would only be the right thing to do as after my birth complications, my mum could not ever have another child. Hence, she said to keep Dads Greek heritage alive and continue I should be named Spiroula. Even my nicknames were cooler than the plain jane anglo names out there. Mum was smart. As our house and family was rich with cultural pride. Come on now name him and honour your hubby and his Dad...with Spiro.

Why is ok for his wife to get her way for everything? It is already agreed upon to name the girl child after her mother. Then why oh why should the boy child be named after her father? Why doesnt Nicholas her husband's parents matter to his wife? Have any of you thought about them even for once? If the girl gets the wife's mothers name. Then of course the boy should certainly have his father's dad name, the paternal grandfather should be respected too. Its like a slap in the face if just the wifes parents matter and get named after both male and female children. Im a feminist but I only believe in what is fair and just. The boy should be named after the paternal grandfather. What a proud and strong name Spiro is indeed. And if both children get the maternal grandparents names, the children will always know that their mum never respected the paternal grandparents at all, and it shall make them question the mother why she didnt love their Dad enough to grant him the support of this wish he deserved. For the sake of her child, the wife should make peace with it now, and remove the petition, and make a promise to name the male child Spiro, not the middle name. Because Nicholas father is first with him, not second best.

I hope people stop signing this petition, really. What father auctions his children's name like this? It's an awful attitude to think your wife or your children owe your relatives anything. It's just wrong. The mother and child will have plenty to deal with when they take care of the father's relatives when they age, because they will most likely have to do that. Let's just be happy the child will carry on both parents' genes, therefore both legacies, and consider a pregnant woman's wishes. If not for personal gratification, then for the chance to make her happy at a time she should enjoy herself, not give into outdated, unjustified, and frankly stupid traditions that were put together by people who had no clue that their legacy is carried on anyway, through genes. Honestly, it's enough this child will carry the grandparents' diseases on. Let's not pretend like he/she isn't doing enough.

I come from a family with kids named Spiro, from ages 15 to 2 years old. None of them have been made fun of! What kind of place is this where we cant name or children after our family. I dont see anyone making fun of the millions of Ahmeds or Carlo's. Yeah lets name all our kids Jeff!!!!!
