We named our son after his grandfather on my husband's side too since it meant so much to my husband. It was an out of the norm name and now I'm wishing we had used it for his firstname instead. However, my husband did give me ultimate veto rights since I went through labor. Good luck to both of you.

Nick, you are bending over backwards for your wife for one thing. For her to honor your family traditions. if she can't respect that she doesn't respect YOU! Stick to your guns and honor your father and family!

Realistically the kid will probably be called Don because everyone will shorten his name. He will be carrying this name all his life. I think to make matters simple the couple should name there child if it is a boy something other then both of these names and make it unique. Also, agree to make the childs middle name Spyridon for the first born male and Michael for the second born male.

I think that the name is great. It gives the child a true heritage, some history that children are lacking these days.

Little Spyridon will be named Spyros by everyone, so he will have both, a classic traditional Greek name and cool 21st century badass nickname. And to counterpoint, his middle nickname will be Mischa, which is a very VERY bad word in my home country. So if he travels to my country, Spyridon/Spyros won't be subjected to sniggers!

As parents you have to work together and compromise on so much. This is only the first thing so hopefully together you will decided on a name you are happy with.

Simply combine the two names, as others have mentioned. The last thing you want is for your potential little boy to come home insisting that you call him "Spyder", because that is something that can/will happen. Either that or he'll come home in tears because the other kids can't pronounce his name and they are calling him "Spyder". Honestly, ethnic names are wonderful, but they can back-fire when they are too hard to pronounce. Combine the two names (Michael as the first name) and he will have a name that will serve him in childhood and he will have his greek cultural name/identity with both his middle and last names. This way, you are still keeping to tradition of naming the firstborn son after the grandfather and BOTH grandfathers can be honored.

It is an awesome name but you guys need to find something you both agree on. My husband was pissed I vetoed one of his choices and I was really pissed he vetoed one of mine (mostly because I suspect it was done out of spite and not really because he didn't like the name) so we found a third option. You just don't overrule one of the parents. Not cool.

Interesting name. I can't imagine calling out to "Spyridon" on the playground, but Spyro is a cool way to shorten it. Go for it. Michael is way too common. Michael makes a great middle name.

I think it is a fine name, and a tradition that should be continued.
