Family names are important. Take it from someone who's first name is his fathers middle name and his middle name is his mothers maiden name.

Traditions are important. I didn't give my son a family name and have regretted it. He kept the tradition and gave his son the family name.

I would go with Michael. Life is hard enough, why make it harder. The mother usually fills out the birth certificate, so put in Michael. My daughter's father hated the name Amy, I loved it, so she is Amy. And her middle name is Victoria after his sister.

I am an Irish American who married a Greek. We all know the first born son is supposed to be named after the paternal grandfather... Keep the tradition alive! Our former priest was named Spyridon... Love the name!

Spyridon Christos Soukeras - and you can call him by his middle name - Chris (or even Spyros - for short. You can have and uphold both tradition and still have a "modern" name. My brother is a Christos Stylianos - goes by Chris in the English community, Christos elsewhere. Absolutely no problem. Some traditions are worth keeping.
