While it might be a difficult name for childhood, i love that it is steeped in tradition and honoring your family and ancestors. Michael is a good, solid name, but far to ordinary and common. Though using Michael as the middle name would be a great way to honor the maternal grandfather. I wish you luck. Oh and love that you are both such good sports about all this. Great story for years to come.

Spyridon is the name of the Patron Saint of Potters, who drove the plague from the large island Corfu. It is a wonderful name, let the father name his first born after his own father.

I feel both parents should agree on nameing the child to avoid any resentment in the future in my opinion even though she doesnt really like the name Spyridon she can always call him Rydon alot of children go by nicknames in life and use their birth names on formal documents like drivers license loans etc..

The poor excuse of the woman has to bear the child for 9 months so she gets to name it seems like a joke to me, and I'm going through my second pregnancy. You know what you are getting into when you have kids. Be grateful you can because some can't. The woman also doesn't have to take his name. That's her choice as well. The husband, on the other hand, needs to understand that if she wasn't agreeing with it beforehand, what makes now different? If you wanted someone that would be about tradition, you should have married someone about tradition. I think it's selfish of both of you not compromising knowing this was going to happen eventually. And for those saying think about the kid, the kid will end up hating their name eventually and then come to love it again. Doesn't matter what it is. At least it's not Apple or Kyd.

Yes please follow Greek tradition. I married a Greek man and named our son Dimitrios after his father (pappou) and it meant the world to their family. "dimo's" best friend is his pappou. best of luck.

Mom, do what I did tell him you're naming him the first name you want and if he wants to argue about it you'll name his last name your own... that shut my husband up LOL... She is right 100% this child is going to be born, raised, and live in the USA give him an American name! I don't even know how to pronounce Spyridon and you know what kids in school will call that kid? Spryo you want your kid to be nick named after a little dragon? If you're so dead set on Spryo give it to him as his middle name, if the kid decideds he likes it later in life he can always go by his middle name.

I am with you all the way...it's up to us to keep our roots and traditions alive. First, it's the name, then no Greek school and pretty soon the Orthodox religion.
