He won't be teased because it is pronounced "Spear i don". My son's name too. If anything, he is popular for it and never had a problem.

I think it is a beautiful name. While I am not Greek, I am perhaps a little more familiar with the name than some other people who are not Greek due to growing up with a Saint Spyridon church in my small town. Regardless, it is a lovely name and the concessions/counterpoints are quite fair. Go for it - your wife will grow to love it and, really, in the end your both going to love your little one no matter the gender or name. Take care!

I had a deal with my wife, if we have a boy I get to name him, if its a girl she gets to name her. I now have two boys.

It should be a father's right to name a firstborn son...and he is quite willing to let the mother name a daughter or a subsequent child of either gender, so it seems eminently fair. Also, what's so bad about Spyridon? It's a cool name!

I don't know about "God given right" blah, blah, blah. And you sound quite a bit pompous however I'm all for traditions. It's not like you are trying to name your kid Leaf to be creative. You are using an important name in your family. I think you should get the whole shebang "Spyridon Nicholas" for first born son. Best wishes to all three of you.

Nick, your wife needs the Greek naming customs explained to her. I congratulate you for keeping tradition. Believe me we (greek americans) still follow it. Why should she have her Father's name given?? is he passed? that "might" be the only reason to do so. Perhaps reading some history on Saint Spyridon would help also. Best of luck & hv a healthy baby! My son's paternal grandfather is a senior and my son's father/my husband is a junior. We discussed naming our son in line, as a third, but my husband chose not to. Therefore we named our son after my father/the maternal grandfather which contains a name my husband dislikes but for us it was one or the other. I believe that the paternal side should have first consideration for first born sons.

I married greek my husband's father's name is konstandino Inamed my son dino. If its a boy you can name him Spiro for short or give it as a second name,either way I think you should use it cause it's a tradition.
