To: The President and Board of Trustees of the Village of Glen Ellyn. We, the undersigned members of the business community and the community at large, do hereby support the position of the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce as stated below. The Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce recognizes the financial challenges the Village is facing. These challenges, much the same as our residents and members of the business community are experiencing, are not insurmountable. The Chamber of Commerce believes the Village has an opportunity to express good faith by not only focusing on their own fiscal responsibilities and challenges, but also those of the residents and businesses it represents. Now is the time for the Village to carefully consider the impact of the proposed sales tax increase on its residents and the health of the business community. Therefore, as the voice and advocate of the business community and the residents we serve, we strongly recommend that the Village utilize their reserves to resolve this year's budgetary shortage. This would be a positive action of support by the Village during a very precarious time in the life of the business district. The Chamber and the business community believe that when there are choices for a solution, those which have the least amount of external impact would best serve the community. Furthermore, we propose that the Village not impost the 1% sales tax increase but revisit the issue in the next fiscal year to re-evaluate the potential need and viable solutions. A sales tax increase at this time represents a negative impact for businesses and consumers alike. Time is what we need for all of us to recover - not new taxes.
