Compulsory RSE starts in Sept 2020 from primary schools education. Parental withdrawal from lessons is currently not allowed.

We want our elected MPs and councillors to voice the concerns of their communities and to stand up for them, rather than take the passive silent approach.

The new regulations seek to limit parental rights to have children educated exclusively in accordance with parents religious beliefs, which are a Protected Characteristic under the equality act 2010.The regulations also breach the protection of religious rights guaranteed by virtue of the European Convention on Human Rights (UK are a signatory), especially Article 2 of Protocol no.1 of the convention which protects the right of parents to have their children educated in conformity with their religious beliefs and philosophical convictions. Also, Article 14 of the UN's Convention on the Rights of the Child clearly states that "governments must respect the rights and responsibilities of parents to guide their child as they grow up [in matters of religious belief]".

The new regulations do not take into account the government’s consultation on the matter:

  • 64% of responses declared that the proposed content was NOT age-appropriate in secondary schools,
  • 58% felt the same about the content in primary schools, and a large proportion disagreed about teaching about alternative lifestyles as set out in the proposed regulations.

This Petition is to show support in wanting parental rights to withdraw from RSE lessons. It will be presented to all those responsible in Nottingham for education and also the MP's. If you would support the parents the right to withdraw their children from compulsory RSE lessons then please sign below.

Note : RSE in this petition refers to any and all lessons where all forms of relationship and sexual education are going to be taught including: PSHE/HE/RE/RSE.
