Wearing tights or hose under skirts is impractical for any girl in this day and age. Girls are not passive on-lookers in education. They are active participants intellectually, spiritually, and physically and their dress code should reflect this. As a professional woman I don't know other professional women who wear hose or tights in their professional attire. This dress code does nothing to prepare our young women for their future careers. Instead it gives these young women the idea that they must be covered to be seen as respected in our church and educational facilities. Doesn't seem like a healthy image to support. Please rethink this policy.

August 7th update from Laura Schmitt, STM parent and petition author: Thanks everyone for your overwhelming support. I presented the petition with signatures and comments to Mr. Bustle. He is reviewing this and I expect we will hear from him soon. I'm confident that he and the administration will hear all of us and return to a socks-with-skirts policy. Until then, I'll keep the petition open so we can keep collecting signatures for anyone who wants to sign.

My husband attended Notre Dame High School in Batavia, NY 60's-70. There were uniforms, but the girls were not forced to wear stockings. The males were required to wear a suit and tie every day. I might add that ladies may even find male hair distracting. Therefore, all males should shave their heads. I have no respect for such an antiquated mentality that is also the epitome of double standards.

This is absurd. This administration isn't even aware of their oppressive, disrespectful mentality by demanding such a thing. In what world can this be conducive to learning for anyone in those classrooms? First of all, it is instilling in young men that it is expected and normal to be aroused by the sight of a woman's legs. It states to women that simply because God created legs for them, they must be covered lest they be viewed as sexual objects. No one can concentrate when they are sweltering in heat and humidity, and worse, feeling so demeaned. Young men, at such an impressive age need to be taught respect. It also states that it's all about the male population. Allowing the males to wear shorts speaks while forcing the ladies to wear opaque nylon stockings speaks volumes about the value of males and females to this administration. If the ladies are forced into this because their parents choose to subject them to such demeaning treatment and refuse to take a stand for them, then at minimum every male in that institution should be forced to wear a long sleeved shirt, tie, and suit jacket with suit pants every day. I might add that ladies may even find male hair distracting. Therefore, all males should shave their heads. I have no respect for such an antiquated mentality that is also the epitome of double standards. I urge parents to take a stand against this ignorance and any supporters withdraw any form of financial support to such an institution. I would not subject any daughter of mine to such a thing and would find a new school that respects women and men for that matter. This is making a strong statement to impressionable young men that they must be overwhelmed by sexual desires incessantly, and understood that they have no way of controlling themselves. It's all the womens' faults. On this attempt alone, I would withdraw any daughters and sons of mine immediately.

I'm in support of uniforms as a whole. There are many benefits to this, however, it can be taken too far. Please put the nylon, tight, stocking policy back to the way it was previously.

Bad policy. Unnecessary and ultimately detrimental. Overturn.

Please drop the tights requirement ! As long as the skirts are proper length! Tights are too heavy for most girls !

It all boils down to the administrations lack of enforcing the old dress code. I do hope the teachers are held to such strict dress requirements. The 2 skirt pattern rationale makes no sense either. So they can tell upper and lower classmen. How will the boys be identified? The girls seem to be getting the shaft in this policy. Did the administration think about the girls legs showing during PE, in shorts, oh and let's not forget the CC uniform, VB uniform, golf girls have a 5in inseam for their golf skirts and shorts, tennis, BB. Do you see my point!

If this school feels that their young women are too "distracting" by the fact that they do, indeed, as human beings, possess legs, the problem lies with a gross lack of appropriate behavior on the part of the boys and men at this institution. The onus does not lie with the women to cover every inch of their skin as though the having or showing of legs is some shameful abomination; rather it lies with the inappropriate thoughts and conduct on the part of the males who are so reportedly "distracted." Where is the mandate that boys learn to respect women and human beings on the whole, as any respectable, let alone, truly Christian institution should teach in the first place? If this is such a pervasive problem, a course on managing lewd and ungodly thoughts and actions must be mandated for the young men of this school at once.

I think STM is going a little overboard with the wearing of tights

As an STM alumni I am taken back by this dress code change. I was under the impression that STM only had a dress code. This is not the case anymore it is a uniform. I don't think it is fair to have all of the restrictions for the women of the school. To solve the problem that was there I don't see why they couldn't implicate that if you wear a skirt you must wear shorts as well. It's an easy fix. As for rolling of the skirts I know for a fact that will never change. If this is too revealing for men then maybe they are the problem. There are women in more revealing clothing on TV and the cover of magazines. So if a skirt is a little too short it's not the end of the world.

When I'm checking out some hot chicks I always make sure to drive slow to get a good look at them and be safe. I mean in a school zone. Don't take my freedom.

Mr. Bustle should just let us wear what we want. This way we wont have this problem.

All uniform policy changes should be grandfathered in boys and girls as families have a major investment in previous uniform requirements and do not want to start a new wardrobe for one year unless the school will agree to flip the bill!
