In 2015, Casper, Wyoming said "yes!" to chickens in town. They put specific regulations in place to address any citizen's concerns. By signing this petition we are asking that Gillette could follow suit with the same regulations.
Do's and Dont's of Backyard Chickens in Casper:
Do's:
-Do have up to 6 chickens per occupied single family residence.
-Do provide fully enclosed and ventilated coop. Chickens must have access to coop and pen at all times. For their own safety they must be kept in coop from dusk to dawn.
-Do keep chickens within yard. If yard fence height doesn't contain chickens, their wings must be clipped.
-Do keep coop under 60 square feet and under 7 feet tall.
-Do keep area clean. Chickens should have access to clean water at all times. Feed must be kept in airtight metal bin to discourage vermin and insects.
Dont's:
-Don't have roosters
-Don't butcher within city limits. Chickens can be rehomed by animal services.
-Don't let them roam. Chickens "at large" will be taken to animal services. Reclaiming fees apply.
-Don't have coop close to neighbor's fences. Coops must be in backyards only and 6 feet from back and side property lines. If backyard backs to an alley it may be 3 feet from the property line.
-Don't allow chickens to come into contact with wild ducks or geese, for their own protection from disease.

I have been staring at the Casper ordinance language all morning and honestly it looks so doable if we can just get someone at the city office to actually sit down and read it. People keep messaging me asking about the coop size requirements and honestly I think the confusion is just a stall tactic because the rules are right there.

I am the Agriculture Teacher at TBHS. Most of my students live in town and keeping chickens would be a great way to help my students be involved in production agriculture.
I will follow these steps. Chickens as well as a garden allow for food sustainability and appreciation of hard work and a good meal. Chickens will help keep bugs down in the garden as well as fertilize the yard. Thank you for this opportunity to provide food for my family and raise my son to learn and grow up with more knowledge on the importance of nutrition.
Having chickens in the yard even a smaller one is wonderful. That we are allowed to keep pigeons which are useless and gross but can't have chickens for homegrown eggs and meat is a public health outrage. Please make this change a reality for the benefit of all of Gillette.
Allow for common sense, responsible rules for allowing chickens within the city limits. It helps people be sustainable and teach children responsibility as well as understanding on where their food comes from.
Hens provide food, eat bugs and give kids a chance to care for an animal other than a dog or cat. Hens are not noisy and very little smell. I would much rather my neighbors have hens than dogs.
Can’t believe chickens are illegal! We must change this immediately. Far too many benefits and hardly any costs.
With a pandemic and limited food supply, this is a great way to allow us to help provide for our own families. No roosters, and limited hens - why is this even an issue?

This is such a basic right. Being self sufficient in ANY way should be encouraged, not hindered. A few chickens isn’t going to hurt anything. They are great for the grass, great for big control and put food on the table. I’ve raised chickens for 16 years and they are the simplest form of easy food there is.
