Get Rid of Downtown Charlottesville Parking Meters

Frustrating for our clients. License plate number. ..really? Just to park! No. Just no.

please remove the new parking meters to allow for a flourishing community

I tried using them one time. I tried to use a card (I don't remember if it was a credit or debit) and couldn't get it to work for me, or figure out how to do it. I ended up putting the few coins I had in my purse into it. I think ~$.75 which gave me ~20 mins (could be more, it's been a while), but nowhere near enough time for what I had to do. The Water St garage gives a free hour and doesn't accept validation; the South St garage, accepts 1 hr validation. After the first hour you have to pay at both of them. Confusing at best! And now (or soon) parking will be free for Holiday shoppers. NOT Fair.

Much too expensive for this size town. I have appointments at a business on 3rd street on the other side of high and there are a few spaces for customers but people are always parking there and then going downtown so we customers have no place to park.

It is burdensome and unnecessary.

Its already expensive to rent in the city of charlottesville why pay more for parking

Difficult to use, often don’t access debit cards, recycle the meters.

It disenfranchises those with more limited resources from coming to the mall; and makes it very challenging for those in the retail and food service businesses on the lower end of the wage scale to earn a decent profit. For the latter population, it’s already a challenge to have to move their cars every two hours; this really pushes it to the edge. Moreover, especially with all the events of this past summer that have continuing repercussions, the city should be working hard to encourage inclusivity and discourage income inequality. In addition, People look for other spaces and the metered parking spots remain empty.

The upkeep, annoyance, inconvenience and ugly appearance of these meters far outweighs any benefit they have to offer.

These meters are no more than another means for the City to obtain money to fuel its reckless spending habits. The meters serve no constructive purpose!

Remove the meters

It’s hard enough trying to find a parking space to be at the Downtow mall. I want to be more accesible. This is hurting the jobs and shops at the mall.

Hundreds of our patrons have personally told us, emailed us, and messaged us that the meters have caused them to stop coming downtown. Instead they said they have chosen to go to 5th st station and Stonefield to do their shopping. It's one thing to test having parking meters in an area and endure the negative effects. The profound difference is that this test was begun on the heels of the multiple white supremacist rallies downtown that suppressed visits to the mall by tourist and by city and country residents. One last thing, these meters were not connected to an app to be used on smartphones. It's almost 2018. We can't be a World Class City if we're still using technology from the 1970's. Not only killing businesses, They make the parking hassles that were prestent before the pilot even greater. Employees of theses businesses can't afford to work at a downtown mall they love! Go to work in new shopping centers (national chains) Boo! Shop local kinda gets screwed on this one. Customers gone and no employees in stores and restaurants. Bad all around for the Downtown Mall.

Meters are a bad idea and only discourage people from going downtown

Keep downtown a place people want to go. With all the other idiotic decisions this council has made, you would think you would want to ENCOURAGE people to visit downtown, not make it harder.

Get rid of the parking meters! It’s hurting small business!

Boycotting small businesses just hurts the business owners, their employees and the sense of community that people care about These businesses needs your support. Instead of boycotting people who had nothing to do with any of the City Council decisions, why not let the city know how you feel?

Another failure from the sitting city counsel and mayor. I’m on the mall four days a week speaking with tourists and business owners. None of them have any good things to say about this ‘pilot’ program on a ‘trial.’ The fiscal view needs to be wider. Taking into consideration the taxes already paid by downtown business directly from selling their goods/services. That should be enough. Find dollars elsewhere. None of the hundreds of people I have spoke with agree with or find any real benefit to the area in launching paid off street parking with this type of PlayStation.
