Get Rid of Downtown Charlottesville Parking Meters

The instructions on the meters are confusing. Is there a way to add time if you pay for one hour, e.g., and need more? Why can’t dollar coins be used? Why do they need to be used until 8:pm? When they were in use, I avoided coming downtown, and I know the merchants have felt that from many others. If the main intent is to keep employees from doing the Charlottesville Shuffle, why not have more park and ride lots with free or low-cost shuttle service?
Norfolk has FRED (Free Ride Every Day) shuttles that bring people downtown (wait for it) for free.
The library has received complaints for the cost and/or distance to walk for parking. I could go on and on, but the meters were ill-conceived, and feel like guerrilla war against the Downtown Mall, the mall we love.

The parking meters are just a further insult to downtown merchants and customers....the city council has shown themselves completely insensitive to all residents in charlottesville....

These parking meters are just ridiculous! How disrespectful to the downtown merchants and we patrons who support them. No other area in C’ville charges to park for shopping and restaurants-unfair and stupid!

Support local business by making parking more convenient. Stop wasting our taxes by putting in meters that nobody wants. How much did that cost?

It has been clearly established, both recently and nearly 20 years ago, that we need at least one more garage to solve the parking problems downtown. The only rationale for installing parking meters is for the City to profit on the back of a civic problem it saw coming 20 years ago and failed to provide for. This policy is greedy and punitive to employees and visitors. Fire the Parking Czar to make up for the lost income from the meters.

Please remove the parking meters. Retail has an uphill battle already with Amazon and online retailers. We need to help our downtown businesses so that we have a thriving downtown economy.

These meters penalize evening employees, typically within the service industry, and cause them to seek inconvenient or unsafe ( read: not well lit) parking alternatives. Restaurant workers cannot feed meters & move cars, nor park in a garage that closes before they are done working.

The parking meters make it harder to drive downtown for short visits. For example, we used to go to the Market Street Market more, but the meters make it hard to just run in for 5 minutes to pick something else.

I have not shopped downtown since the meters were installed. The city continues to destroy downtown commerce with one misguided new measure after another.
