The worst cycling commentator ever. I feel sorry for all the others (Sean Kelly, Brian Smith, etc.) who have to support him. He can't read a race and just spouts a constant stream of drivel to cover up for his failings. If this was football he wouldn't last 5 minutes. Compare him to Simon Brotherton (the BBC's excellent cycling commentator) whose main speciality is football. As far as Eurosport is concerned they have good commentators like Rob Hatch but the best of all was David Harmon who in my opinion was equal to or better than Phil Liggett & Paul Sherwin. Looking forward to watching the TDF soon but if Kirby is commentating I will have to switch over to ITV4. Bring back David Harmon!

It's Friday afternoon on Stage 3 in the Alps; and we have a rant his words on the roof coverings of the picturesque village.His comments and very odd humour really spoils the whole event. By comparison with other channels, really poor.

I feel bad but cannot help agreeing, his endless divel is genuinely detracting from my enjoyment of the cycling. Particularly annoying is his frequent incorrect identification of a rider who has gone off the front or been shelled out of the back, his co-commentator has to wait for him to finish his over excitable rant to tell him politely , that the rider he has mentioned was not actually in this race.

Hit new low in finale of 1st stage of this year's Dauphine. Totally incoherent & topped off by calling the wrong winner.
"You can see how vocal the crowd is" was another classic.
Topped off by the endless tortured metaphors...

The man is a fat fool, knows nothing other than what he picks up from others, cars that were for runner of others, but gets it wrong, tells everyone, the squealing of brakes is, Rubber ON Carbon, NO, you use cork blocks, tells everyone Last of The Summer Wine was made in Hebden Bridge, ON it was Holmfirth, then repeats repeats repeats, insists on telling viewers on races they will never have heard of, how the mountain categorisation came about, we, the dedicated are the only watching, its Tour De France the casual watcher will be, yes we've heard it a million times, and every year from him, tell me what this is to do with cycling, "A ball of Sardines in a Portuguese Harbour" bowl of fruit or just a banana, bow wave of a motor bike ??? missed the tree come down in high wind, but said, "not sure why they are walking on grass, Potato fields each side, so it could end in a mash" speech/ thought bubble, during the tour helicopter was over Trout Farm, after a while he came out with, "dont know why we are hovering over Sewage works " you could see the FISH.

Quite frankly I'm sick of Kirby plying his trade where it's not wanted. When will he realise that banging on about e.g. Tony Martin's bottom lip or someone else's chin, ears or teeth isn't funny - it's downright offensive to the rider concerned? Whether he stays or goes, some disciplinary action is required.

I mostly listen to Eurosport in Hungarian, but I always try to listen to the English commentary too on Eurosport Player. If it's Kirby, I switch off. Just Terrible. Even David Duffield was better.

Cannot stand this blokes ridiculous chattering it is painful knowing that as one ridiculous metaphor completes another is about to be thrown our way. If I was Brian Smith who is brilliant by the way I would have to make a strong suggestion that Carlton is removed from the commentary team.

I wrote to Eurosport some years ago asking why they persisted with CK. Apparently he's popular with people who don't know anything about cycling.
