It is VERY sad that your brother died as a result of his own actions, but if he HAD NOT been threatening other civilians and the RCMP members with a weapon, and HAD complied with the commands of the responding members, then he would NOT have been shot. "Clients" brandishing edged weapons can inflict grievous bodily harm to, or cause the death of, persons they threaten and attack at an astonishingly rapid pace, and if they STILL do so when confronted by one, or more, members that have not only issued verbal commands, but have their firearms drawn-down on them, then such "clients" are a danger to EVERYONE.
The IIO WILL conduct a professional, independent investigation, and WILL release their findings to the public. IF the report supports, or recommends, criminal charges against the responding members, then so be it. However, encounters such as this one involving your brother are, unfortunately, increasing, and it is up to friends and family to do EVERYTHING they can to HELP those "clients" and PREVENT such tragedies. Such actions include seeking medical intervention, Court-order-psychiatric treatment, and, if you have to, physical intervention.
Such situations are NOT like in a movie or TV show - when firearms MUST be discharged, the target MUST be centre-mass, to inflict the MOST pain against the "client" with the LEAST likelihood of missing the INTENDED "client" and ACCIDENTALLY wounding, or causing the death of, a non-involved "client". Aiming for a small target, such as an extremity, INCREASES the likelihood of a miss, or, even when such a target HAS been struck, not enough pain may have been caused to deter the "client" from proceeding, or may still allow her / him to continue the fight.
If you feel that you can NOT trust the Police, then I feel VERY sad for you. When Police DO commit wrongdoings, they ARE punished, and such criminal charges HAVE been pursued VERY vigorously lately.
And, yes, I AM a retired (4.5+ years) RCMP Regular Member (35+ years ex

Shocked that a incident like this to happen in a small community! What is the protocol for that officer in a incident like this?? If person is aggressive and welding a knife, shoot till hes dead!! Was this a properly trained officer?? Im sure there were other means the officer could have used like tazers first!! Why not call in someone to talk down the young man?? This whole situation is beyond understanding! The police officer(s) have alot of explaining to the Family and Public for their actions!!!

How are we as citizens able to trust the Police when this happens! That could have been anyone's Son in Canada! I am truly disturbed by the RCMP's actions in this matter! I can't help but wonder if this was a RCMP's child if this would have gone down the same way? Shame on you RCMP!

I have met him a few times at my home or with my sons. He was such a polite young man. He didnt deserve this. There was no need to shoot him at all. A knife or not. And for the media to post his past just to try justify him being shot. I really think that the police involved to have be accountable for thier action. They bring these trainees up to Port Hardy and crap like this happen. They have been watchi g too many movies. Shoot a young man that many times. Did he have a gun..No!! A small knife. They should have spent more time talking to him...and then stunned him. My prayers to all of his family and friends that are hurting so badly right now. RIP James. You didnt deserve this.

My heart goes out to this young man's family and friends. Law enforcement must step up and change how they deal with mental distress. Could a taser not have been used, a mental health professional called to the scene. This is so very wrong, a young man is dead because of mental health issues. How many more sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters must die due to ignorance of mental health issues? Again, my deepest condolences to family and friends. RIP James...I am so sorry this happened to you, and your family </3

Regardless of prior convictions the police could have responded with a trained mind... It seems these cops took it way to personal like always in a small town... Post cops have ALWAYS had a bad rep... So so many other ways to deal with this situation like really...
