Please keep AA! Being someone who has no study hall and plays sports, i need to have AA because I'd have no other time to get help from teachers!

Hello. I will be returning to CNS as a senior in the fall. This past year, our high school has implemented an academic advisement program of 30 minutes. It completely boggles me that anyone would consider removing this program as it has been a godsend to so many of the students at our school. Some have claimed that this academic advisement program takes time away from our classes. While this is true, students only lose a few minutes from each block. The rest of the time that makes up our academic advisement was pulled from our passing time and our homeroom was decreased by 5 minutes as well. In regards to passing time, it was only decreased from 5 to 4 minutes. As a student that has to travel the building all over, it has never been an issue and on top of that, when we had 5 minutes to pass everyone was always in their classes early with much time to spare. It has actually decreased the amount of fooling around in the hallways between classes. In regards to homeroom, I have to do the PA announcements in the morning and my homeroom is already 5 minutes shorter than everyone else is in CNS every other day. Even with that said, my homeroom is still sufficient for me to eat breakfast, meet with friends, and do what I need to do in the mornings. With that said, I do not believe that homeroom is an adequate substitute for academic advisement which I will later explain. Personally, I am an AP and honors level student. Because I am in higher level classes, I do not have a study hall. This time advocates for all students in that it gives everyone an equal study hall regardless of class level or difficulty. All students are able to use this time to work on homework, see teachers and get extra help, socialize with friends, make up gym classes, complete music lessons, e t c. I have been dealing with many illnesses this year they have kept me out of school, including a surgery that kept me out of school for about a week. This does not give me hope for when my son attends CNS. With his adhd he will definitely need the extra help, and with his extra-curricular activities having the time to complete work in school will be valuable and practical. Please consider reinstating AA.

I have been a straight A student ever since i first started school. Ive always enjoyed keeping myself busy so once i hit 8th grade where i has the option to pick some class of my own i filled my schedule. I havent had a single study hall since 7th grade. AA was a time i could work on school things and ask for help if needed. For a 16 year old with a part time job that takes up most of my time at home, AA is needed to uphold my grades.

AA needs to be kept! Although I am graduating from high school this year but AA had been such a wonderful break for seniors. It’s a time to chill with friends and to makeup any music lessons. Library time during AA allows students that doesn’t have a study to utilize the time for any last minute studying and printing.

AA was extremely helpful for not only myself, but many of my peers. It helped students to do homework, get help from teachers, make up music lessons and even just give kids minds a break in the school day. HOWEVER, there was problems with this specifically for the art department. Some art teachers had AA’s not in their own rooms and students couldn’t work on art projects or photography assignments during this time. If AA is brought back, please give art teachers a chance to have their rooms open for students to use without having to deal with a class of random kids.

My son is a junior and he LOVED AA! It was vital for him to have that time to work on assignments, make up gym class due to illness and surgery, made up music lessons so he would not have to miss his classes, From the standpoint of a mom who KNOWS how conscientious of a student my son is, and how demanding his honors and AP courses are, every extra minute he gets to use is not only imperative, but highly appreciated. Between the rigorous classwork assignments and extracurricular activities, it's tough to fit in family life, social life, or even downtime. Please don't take this precious time away from the 90 percent of the student population and parents that want it! Respectfully, a Very Concerned CNS parent, Kim Privler

Very disappointed to hear this. My son said it was a big help. My daughter is starting CNS in the fall and is very busy. She was looking forward to the benefits of AA.

I'll enter 10 grade in the fall. As an Autistic student. AA will give me the extra time with teachers to keep up my grades. As I need extra assistance in math and science. Please keep AA.

This issue is an incredible metaphor to represent the true communication and relationship between students and administration at CNS. The students want AA to continue because it's effective and beneficial for one's personal wellness and academic success, but of course, CNS fails yet again at understanding a students' needs. Anyone who has been through the CNS educational system will understand how amazing it was to see such a positive change to high schooler's academic life. However, it is typical of administration to get rid of a program that so many have expressed as being an essential and indispensable part of school life. AA has solved so many previous issues at CNS and completely shutting it down after one year is inevitably going to make all those issues arise once more. Notes from the guidance office, music lessons, PE make-ups, distributions of schedules, test corrections, make-up work from absences, dropping material off to teachers, are all apart of AA. Why would CNS get rid of a program which makes everything so much easier for students and parents? Although I'm very disappointed, I'm also not surprised in the least to see administration faulting at giving students something that they clearly want. It's an embarrassment that a petition even needs to be made in the first place. Administrative values ought to be what the student body deems them to be. It's unethical for those in higher power to get rid of AA because they don't want it anymore. It's pathetic, which is also an accurate word to describe administration as a whole at CNS.
