From: Parents at Gems Royal Dubai School

3rd April 2020

To: The Management,

Gems Royal Dubai School

Sub: Fee Reduction on Third Semester’s E-Learning

Dear Sir / Madam

In light of the existing situation, we, parents at Gems Royal Dubai, appreciate the Institutions’ continuous support and back the decision of the school’s closure for the safety of its students. However, we feel that it is unjustified that GRDS is demanding a full fee payment for the Third Term’s Distance Learning Program.

It is important to address that the online learning platform is not a complete alternate, but rather a supplement to the Term Education. Parents have to put in more than 5-7 hours a day, assisting children to complete the daily assigned lessons, provide resources, stationary, technology, not to mention the added mental strain and pressure of working from home simultaneously.

Moreover, Keeping the current situation in mind, that the Government has clearly created policies in place which gives the employers a choice to reduce the salaries appropriately. While we appreciate the school’s decision to pay its staff in full, but we also firmly believe that this is purely an employer’s decision and responsibility and that the financial implications of this decision must not be passed on to the parents.

In addition to this, the children are not attending school for the entire semester, neither using the premises, utilities, facilities nor all extra circular activities which are now closed for the entire semester thus reducing the school’s costs.

We also believe that Gems’ current offer of a Relief Fund package is unreasonable, as this cannot be subjected to a handful of families, as all parents’ across the board are effected.

Over the course of last few weeks, we have seen businesses and companies suffer, families across the city are taking the brunt of this situation- most employees are being laid off, forced to take unpaid leave or are facing up to 30% pay cuts. Most Businesses are struggling and commercial activity has now come to a complete halt. These are severely difficult times for all of us.

In light of this current situation, many schools in Dubai are supporting the parents and have announced reductions in fees.

As prominent education providers in the UAE, we expect Gems to lead the way by example and therefore, we collectively appeal to Gems Education to re-consider our request for a minimum 30% Fee Reductions for the Third Term ‘Distance Learning Program’. These are difficult times for all of us, and we hope Gems would play its part.

Your co-operation shall be highly appreciated,

Parents of Gems Royal Dubai

Whilst it is appreciated the Gems RDS engagement, agree to sign petition as a single income parent during this challenging period where we try to retain normalcy yet balance downsizing of income and impact on life overall. Expect empathetic response from school whilst retaining teachers who are a valuable asset indeed.

In this difficult time, Private Companies are asking staff to go on unpaid leave , they are making salary cuts and some people are unfortunately losing jobs. Will appreciate GEMS Education to come forward, as first Institute in DUBAI and set an example, on how to support the community in this pandemic. Thanks.

Eventhough I have already paid the full amount of Term3 fees but I also feel its not fair on us to pay the full fees while schools are closed ...we are not using several school's facilities ..e.g Electricity...water...child care and health care...security...plus we are doing most part of the teaching at home.

Kids and teachers are doing amazing job, parents are trying their best and KHDA is supportive. Now it is GEMS's turn. We believe GEMS is considering how to support the community now, not how to prioritize profit maximization.

These are very difficult times for all of us! My husband and I are both on 50% deduction from our salaries. We are working so hard with the kids and this take us so much of our time and energy. Paying full fees for term 3 doesn’t make any sense at all.

I believe that all parents deserve reduction of fees, not only those who suffer directly from pay cuts (as I am). Its not fair that everywhere in Europe and entire world all private schools are reducing fees with at least 30% and Gems should be a part of those.
