Because of its important impact on the history of popular culture;
Because of its deeply funky groove;
Because of its positive social message, which promotes self-expression, self-empowerment, and civic involvement;
We, the undersigned, call on the President and Members of Congress to designate May 3rd – birthday of Funk pioneer James Brown – as National Funk Music Appreciation Day.
We furthermore call on all Americans to celebrate National Funk Music Appreciation Day by listening to funk music, by getting involved in their communities, by promoting self-expression and self-empowerment, and by living life to the funkiest.
