I’m reaching out with concerns about the plans for starting elementary school in Davis county. I appreciate and understand that there is no perfect plan and that decisions are being made with no experience with navigating a global pandemic.
I will start with my concern that the plans objective to limit exposure at school greatly increases exposures for children OUTSIDE of school. Parents have to work. Having a child only attend school 2 days a week leaves many families struggling to cover both the cost of child care AND the need to find child care, which there is currently a shortage of. The exposures children will face at the various child care experiences will then all be brought back to the classrooms. It’s forcing kids to be sent to many different school classrooms (childcare) and then bring them all back to the class room twice a week to share these exposures. Contract tracing will be extremely complicated by this.
I have several children with severe learning disabilities. They receive services more than 2 days a week at school. How will the district accommodate these services outlined by 504 and IEP plans? My children with learning disabilities have lost progress that they have fought so hard for. 2 days of school and lessened services will result in a sickening amount of loss of learning. We can’t do this to them!
Expecting parents who have no training, no education in the field of teaching to take the 3/5ths of the week and expecting success says that there is no value to the training and education of professional teachers if it can so easily be turned over to parents. I don’t believe this one bit BUT handing 3 days over to parents is like saying your brain surgeon only needs to start the surgery and that your spouse can take over 3/5ths and just leave good notes for you to follow to complete the procedure. It’s not a recipe for success in education or brain surgery.

Kids need to be in school! The death rate of covid is extremely low this makes absolutely no sense! You will see suicide rates increase and abuse increase because of this!!

Kids need to attend school in person 5 days a week. For many more reasons then the below 1% Chance of a kid being impacted by Covid. Open the school, give the kids/parents the choice.

Only one disagreement with the petition, and that is that the American Academy of pediatrics “is a conservative organization“. However, as a family physician, I wholeheartedly support the petition and children going back to school full-time. This virus is dangerous for people over age 65, especially with comorbidities, but the response has been more political and Orwellian, than medically sound, for this COVID-1984.

My kids will not learn effectively with such a random Schedule. My kinder last spring had the hardest time with me trying to help him. I think it’s in their best interest to have consistency.

School needs to be back in session all 5 days full-time. We are creating a generation of “lost” children. They are suffering the consequences of adult panic and misinformation.
Rely on the science. Leading pediatricians in the United States have stated that they would send their own children back to school without question. They know that it is best for the child. Look at what other countries are doing. Children have been back in school since March in European countries. My fear is that next you will cancel or “postpone” sports and high school activities to keep our children safe. Please do not.
Why are we crippling our brightest and best generation?
Teachers are essential workers. The teachers union has too much power. They say that teachers will die if they go back to work but where are all of the essential workers that have been working this whole time? They are still at work! These are the questions we need to ask - and find the answers to.
Children do not transmit the virus.
We as parents have a right to send our children to public education. We pay for public education. Parents should have a voice in this decision. Those parents that are concerned for their children should be able to choose online learning. Parents should have a choice to send our children full-time.
This decision also places a burden on the teachers. Teachers want to teach their students. They want one-on-one interactions with their students.
Let’s all be brave and do what is best for the children.
Please reverse your decision.
