I believe the Jackson Thorin should survive. He is the hero of the trilogy no matter what Tolkien said. I happen to keep the two supports separate. I love both but seldom refer one to another. They are two of a kind and I love them both.

But when he did die, it was the best and most moving part of the book. After I finished, I'm glad that that scene between Thorin and Bilbo happened.

Have you read anything written by Tolkien?! If Thorin lives it throws a wedge into the brilliant and complicated timeline that he made. Just because it's fiction doesn't mean that it doesn't have to make sense.

It's called "The Hobbit". So we'd expect it to be "The Hobbit". And in "The Hobbit", Thorin dies. And it's the best and most moving part of the book. But I'm guessing you never read it. The films would be bland and uninteresting if everything was just happy and there were no problems at all.
