Frenchtown Preservation - No (More) Student Housing

Save this historic neighborhood. Does Tallahassee really need more student housing? We've gotten tons more student housing that's put up near FSU and the civic center. Are these new buildings really completely full already?

Please do not let student housing destroy the character of Frenchtown. The residents deserve better.

Save Frenchtown Community. If it is not preserved future generations wont know our past. I remember the businesses. Bring back the businesses to Macomb and beautify the Community. Place the Housing Complex on West Tennessee Street near Publix complex where the Hotel was.

Listen to the community residents and friends... This is a historic community that needs revitalization, redevelopment opportunities, and true investors interested in honoring the history of Frenchtown... we don't need another Smoky Hollow! #SaveFrenchtown

Student houseing is NOT appropriate to locate in this historic area. The city has already botched up a huge part of it. Please leave it alone and honor the residents' wishes! Elizabeth Gablehouse

I agree with those opposing this project. Neighborhoods must be protected from demolition and dense development.

I attended the March 21 rally and press conference to oppose sale of the .87-acre French property for student housing. I was unable to attend the City Commission the following day, but sent my comments to the Commission by sendig them to City Auditor/Clerk Jim Cooke at [email protected]. PLEASE do this if you CANNOT attend a City Commission meeting. I believe my comments along with those of citizen attendees helped stall the sale of this property for the time being.

NO MORE STUDENT HOUSING IN FRENCHTOWN!

I live in this area and dont want to be anu closer to student housing. It will ruin this historic area.

The city should be supporting the greater community needs and preserving its cultural areas on a scale consistent with the community ambiance.

I oppose the sale of this land for student housing.

Although a little-known City committee is imposing its will on all of us, to pack as many people into the central area as possible, this would be an outrage to Frenchtown residential wishes and to the rest of the citizens of Tallahassee. Who in the world would wish oversized student housing projects so close to downtown? What students need to be anywhere but close to their school and daily activities? The idea of allowing large development just anywhere the developer decides needs to be reconsidered by the City. We are very much opposed to this type of development in downtown (Frenchtown) Tallahassee.

It is time for the City Commission to be more mindful of preserving residential neighborhoods, and to establish effective working relationships with existing neighbors. In-filling makes sense, but it should be done in a way that that is concordant with the wishes of current residents. Instead of creating a student housing project that is totally out of scale and synch with Frenchtown, please work with the neighborhood to create a thoughtful and well conceived plan that will guide logical and compatible land use in the future. Please give the neighborhood inside access to the planning process at a level that is at least on par with what developers now enjoy.

There are many creative options for mixed income housing and business opportunity developments which our community need and want.

As it says - new infill of residential and commercial would be great... but at a "Missing Middle" scale - not a super-plex scale!

We just fought this for Myers Park! Find a compatible development option instead of super high density neighborhood character changing ones! Student housing could go somewhere else. Density far too high!

Housing for families and working people is needed in Frenchtown, not student housing. Please cancel the sale of this land for student housing.

These many comments show how important preservation of historic Frenchtown is. STUDENT HOUSING is inappropriate for this neighborhood. Whether you are Black or white, powerful or not, all Tallahassee residents should honor this historically thriving African American community and help to foster continuation of that same neighborliness in the future. Some quality assisted living and tiny homes were mentioned, but what other ideas are there? Let's listen to the present residents, honor the historic Frenchtown, and understand the importance of a sense of place. Please do not destroy what's left of this historically African American community, like the power structure did when urban renewal destroyed Smokey Hollow. VOTE NO on student housing in this area.
