This petition is intended for the attention of the French department at The University of Hull. It contains signatures of the students studying French at the university. The students who undertook the French Language 6 exam this summer would like to put forward a petition to extend the time allocated for future years. We the students, feel that the time allowed was not sufficient to complete the set pieces to the best of our abilities. A great deal has voiced opinions on the facebook group, and in person, that they were discouraged by their performance. We feel that, if more time were allowed our chances of receiving the best grades would have been higher. Though we were aware of what was expected of us, the length and level of difficulty of the text and the translation were not manageable in a 2 hour slot. The department must also take into consideration that we are rarely able to finish a treated and checked translation in a 50 minute class. Language exams should allocate time for students to check their writing for grammar and spelling. In a 2 hour period, this was not felt possible. This will all be evident when the scripts are marked. Though this is not something that affects us as finalists, it is something that should be changed as a matter of principal. The department must take into account the feelings of the students in relation to academic practices. Our results do not only affect us, but also the entire health of the department.

paper was too long for us to demonstrate our ability and the questions to the comprehension part of the paper were completely different to what we have practised in class.

As this year was the first year the French Language 6 exam was taken in this particular format, I feel that the student response should be considered especially valuable to the department in ensuring that students in future years are able to demonstrate their language skills to the best of their ability and to to achieve the best results possible.
