Keep the option to take a dip without a fine. Swimming in gorges is another issue.

Bob Nape, a Lansing resident, also appeared before the board to read a letter expressing his concerns about the gorge ranger program.
“The death of the young man last summer was certainly a tragedy, as are all accidental deaths, but the lesson learned should be how to make it safer,” Nape said. “Hiking and swimming in the gorge have untold positive benefits, mentally, emotionally, physically, and psychologically … Our need and urge to be in harmony with Mother Nature is a powerful force within us that draws us away from the concrete, glass, and steel of the urban environment.”

On Monday, May 9, the Ithaca town board heard from Logan Bell about a petition effort to “free the gorges” which had collected about 120 signatures in a week online (ipetitions.com/petition/freethegorges).
“I’ve heard the status quo arguments,” Bell said, “and we’re advocating for the free use of gorges, around all the creeks. Residents want slip into a creek and have a nice dip without fear of a $200 ticket—we don’t want the issue to be boxed into college kids being irresponsible and partying at Second Dam. This disproportionately affects working-class people who are looking to cool off on a hot summer day.”

We pick litter up when we go to second dam, not leave it behind. I also agree if you make swimming illegal in one of our creeks, soon it will be illegal to swim in all of them.

Please do not assume that you know better how people ought to live their lives than they themselves do. The freedom to swim at one's own risk should not be taken away from Ithacans.

Swimming should not be a crime. The vast majority of us enjoy swimming in the six mile creek swimming holes and do so responsibly. Why not invest this money in a regular trash service to these sites? We should be encouraging people to enjoy and interact with natural areas rather than restricting access and policing these sites.

Definitely not a crime. Easy walking-distance access to natural woods and swim spots is one of Ithaca's main attractions. Sabotaging that would be a sad step to just another piece of concrete suburbia, like a neatly-cut sterile grass lawn that noone's allowed to walk on. Punishing residents for enjoying nature destroys value in a big way. If swimmers can't swim, subsidize swimming lessons.

I largely don't actually swim but it is a fine pastime that has been around forever it is part of ithaculture and to over regulate it is a sure way to make this region less than it is and has been.
