Open and educated debate is always vital and even more so in today's world. For a place of learning to apply policies, no matter how well meaning individually, that stifles this is a ridiculous situation. In my time at Edinburgh I was educated by going to lectures, living life and yes, engaging in free speech with others. Many of which I disagreed with and was often offended by. I am by far a better person for having been able to do that. If you are denying today's students the same opportunity by these policies, shame on you EUSA.

Banning newspapers because you dont like what is in them is the sign of a totalitarian society.

No platforming is illiberal and regressive, and I want my university encourage open and rigourous discussion on all matters.

Disappointing that the once radical free thinking EUSA has been hijacked by leftist reactionary censors

Yes, you have the right to be offended. Doesn't mean you get to shut out all opinions you don't like.

Free speech is a cornerstone of our democracy. If we cannot defeat extremists by our arguments we will lose to ban them putting the argument means admitting loss before we start

To quote Barack Obama: "I've heard some college campuses where they don't want to have a guest speaker who is too conservative or they don't want to read a book if it has language that is offensive to African-Americans or somehow sends a demeaning signal towards women. I gotta tell you I don't agree with that either. I don't agree that you, when you become students at colleges, have to be coddled and protected from different points of view."

By silencing views you disapprove of, you go most of the way towards creating unsafe spaces everywhere.
