As someone proud to have attended the University of Edinburgh, I'm shocked to hear such restrictive and damaging policies have been adopted. If the views of a speaker upset you don't listen, or even better engage in an academic and critical debate with them. Safe spaces just encourage ignorance, censorship, and fear of critical engagement, all of which should be fought against at university level.

If something is offensive, either you are a wee bit too sensitive or they're a dick. Maybe even both. No Platform comes from people being dicks, and others being sensitive. Just don't be a dick, grow a thicker skin, and we'll all be happy.

Self-victimisation is destroying my generation, and the 'No Platform' and 'Safe Space' policies are only two out of many symptoms of our degeneration.

Free speech and the contesting of ideas are essential in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding, especially at a distinguished University.

As a former student of Edinburgh University I wholeheartedly support this petition. It is only by hearing and arguing with different opinions, especially those that come into direct conflict with our own opinions and values, that we fully develop our own ideas. University should be the place that we have the space to do this.

This is what is happening in most colleges in America and they want to bring it to Edinburgh University. No, no. Free speech (even if it's unpolitically correct) should be allowed...

Banning speakers with dissenting views is an abhorrent practice to take place at a university! Policies such as these attempt to make university a sterile environment for all. This is not the purpose of a university! They should exist to challenge the minds of their students, not to protect them from any radical thought. It is ridiculous. Time to change.

free speech is a human right and it should not be taken away by people who feel easily offended I'm not saying its all right to insult people based on their colour of skin or their gender, but it is not all right to remove peoples free speech to defend people who can accept the fact that the world is not a nice place.
