Safe spaces are an abomination, derived from the leftist environments of many American universities. If it reaches European shores, and finds foothold, it will erode one of the finest contributions of Anglo Saxon culture to the world: The free and independent university.

Free speech is too important to be silenced. Recall the chant of the young child taunted in a school playground: "Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me." If a six year old can understand this, surely a student with three or more good grades at 'A' level can, too.

To quash free speech at university - a place that's supposed to be a fortress of free thought - flies in the face of progress, dignity and human liberty.
We owe it to our children to pass them on a world that doesn't punish dissenting opinion. Today's students are tomorrow's shapers of society, they should be exposed to the diverse range of thought that the human race is so miraculously capable of generating.

How can you have intellectually challenging debates about foreign policy etc. without offending someone else's view? A Safe Space breeds childlike ignorance.

I once taught in a university in a Middle Eastern Gulf country in which censorship was the order of the day. Consequently its academic standards were abysmal. Is this what you want for the University of Edinburgh?

Silencing people with different opinions is dangerous for both sides.
Students should be faced with controversial ideas, making them critical thinkers.
People with controversial views should be challenged by debates, having to reassess their position again and again and again.
Non of the two sides profits from shutting down these debates.
Furthermore, even though safer space is based on good intentions, it can be dangerous, as it is a powerful tool that can be misused. Who is to decide what is included in safer-space and what isn't? This is a huge amount of power given to very few people.

Students should be encouraged to hear views that challenge them, and to debate them, not have the wool pulled over their eyes so they can disappear further into generation snowflake.
