Kuznetsov's arrest is a depply shameful moment for the Russian authorities, and ought to make the organisers of the 2022 ICM strongly reconsider.

At least nine ICM2022 committee members have already signed this petition - please encourage others to join our community effort to free one of our most prominent Russian colleagues!

With grave concern I heard about the news of the arrest of the mathematician Alexander Kuznetsov -- winner of the European Mathematical Society prize of 2008 -- after preacefully protesting the detention of Alexey Navalny. I ask that he - and other peaceful protesters - be freed immediately.

As a fellow mathematician I condemn dictator Putin's repression against Prof. Kuznetsov, other colleagues, and the brave russian people in general who participated in the peaceful protest supporting Mr. Navalny.

He should make a lecture in my faculty on 10 february. Also Azat Miftakhov, a PhD student was arrested for political reasons with false accusations. Silencing the expression of political ideas is a crime, and all governemnt should step forward to denounce it.

This is an outrage - Professor Kuznetsov is a mathematician with a huge international profile and Russia will severely damage its scientific reputation with this kind of behaviour. He must be released immediately.
