Return Free Public Access to La Jolla High School's Track and Field

This is the first place I have ever lived where a public high school’s track & field were not available to the public when not in use by the school. They state they feel they can do this because its renovations came from a proposition’s funds, not general school tax. However, where did the district get those funds for the propositions, if not the public? The public still continues to pay general school taxes, so unless La Jolla becomes a private school— the track needs to be reopened for public use.

Great facility that should be available for the public good. Shouldn't be that difficult to open the gates and let people use it. I don't know exactly when it became a thing to lock up publicly funded facilities like this but I think it is a shame.

Has there been an progress lately on this issue? I'd love to be able to use the track for the occasional workout. I stopped by the track on Sun 2/14/2021, and it was very much locked up.

I used to come to the track all the time with my dad. I'd like to see it open to the public again, if not for free then for a small membership fee like the pool has.
PS: Principal Shelburn was a better principal than this new guy is. Sad that he and former Vice-principal Mr. Fairley are no longer working at the high school. (I graduated in '09)

Please allow free access to La Jolla high School track & field for the community to use when not in use by the school.

We have been using the HS track for years.
It makes no sense that we the tax payers who put the new field in, and support the school, can't use the Public High school track for exercise.
Please show me other PUBLIC High Schools that restrict the use of their track and field?

The facilities are first class and an important part of living a life of fitness in a California manner.
I support responsible use of the facilities as well. The Saturday Soccer Group (10 years LJHS) has had nothing but friction and resistance from LJHS and the District, but finally a solution was found that was acceptable to all parties.
The running track should not be so difficult as was the soccer deal.

La Jolla High's Track and Field and Tennis facility are a wonderful community asset and should be open to the public when not in use by the school. Super safe for the young and old users to train or learn a new sports skill in a healthy, well parked accessible location for all La Jolla residents.

We love to take our children to run on the track, when not in use by the high school. It's a wonderful place to have time together as a family and we miss having access.

My friend is hearing impaired and runs there. Otherwise it's hard to hear cars when on the streets. She feels safe there.

Mostly uninformed comments here. Not a single public high school in SDUSD is open to the public. LJHS is not a public park. The Rec Center serves that purpose. The facility is available to rent and people are doing that right now. There must be a responsible adult to monitor the facility for any kind of community access, similar to the Coggan Pool. A nominal fee to pay their wages is the best solution. Paying taxes doesn't give you a ride on the fire truck, does it? Be realistic.

I suggest replacing Mr. Podhorsky with a Principal who deserves the position. That would be someone who recognizes that the education of our young people involves more than learning about property rights and liability risks. Certainly, those should not be placed above reasonable sharing of resources and responsible community behavior.
