I am against this change as it reduces the time my children have in the afternoon/evening. It is already difficult fitting in homework, extracurriculars and other obligations and having them go to bed at a reasonable time. My children and I all agree that a later start time will just create a later bed time.
We ensure our children get sufficient sleep. While it may not be considered ‘the right’ hours, it is sufficient. That, coupled with an electronics curfew has worked well.
And while it doesn’t impact my family directly, I am very concerned about those families who have high schoolers look after their younger children that will be forced to find new options.

Kids get more time after school to finish homework and other activities. If the time time change their schedule will be delayed.
The school committee is not thinking, a large percentage of families rely on high school students to sit them after school. With this change that will end, putting more students into the solutions programs which generate more money for the schools. Shocking!!

This High School time shift will hurt student athletes and those with after school clubs or jobs. (I also think it will back-fire and cause MORE truancy as these kids will be leaving for school AFTER most of their parents are out of the house, what will stop them from not going?) The fact that Middle School students are slated to start even later is a disaster! Their after school activities will become non-existent! And how are they going to get to the schools without a parent available to drive them... unless the plan is to force more parents into paying the exorbitant bus fees. There have been no studies done regarding the elementary level. What is starting so extremely early going to do to them? And what about the hours they now have at home without older siblings? The increase in daycare costs will be in the thousands! All things considered this is a VERY poorly conceived plan and should be voted DOWN!

My daughter is elementary school. She has a hard enough time getting up now. She is with her father a couple of days a week that she has to travel a half hour to school. This wouldn’t help our situation. Your not prepping high schoolers for being out in the real world, their bosses aren’t going to care that they need more sleep. We have all managed to get up and function with the start times as they are for years.

NO - the proposed changes will negatively impact parents who work. Especially single parent homes may not have flexibility in changing work schedules. Most companies have standard work hours from 8-5:00pm and that does not even include commute time. Finding care for a child for an hour in the morning would be a hardship. The current schedule has worked successfully for how many year - do not fix what is not broken.

Negatively impacts Elementary School. Strongly opposed.
