Please take some more time to consider the start time change. A number of important issues have come to light recently and I hope these can be resolved before this vote takes place. Families need answers about impact on current teachers, clubs, after school care, after school jobs, sports programs and more. thank you!

Huge impact on families & students and not enough transparency. We went from exploring the options to having 7 people decide for thousands without enough conversation in between.

Based on the information shared to date, the cons seem to outweigh the potential benefits of this change. At minimum this change requires more consideration by the affected population given the significant impact to many aspects of raising children in Franklin.

My concern is that the school age children won’t get enough sleep. Recommendation is 9-11 hours for ages 6-13, depending on the person. If one assumes a 6 am wake time required for the schedule change (my 8 year old typically sleeps until 7AM), to reach 10-11 hrs of sleep the child must go to bed at 7 or 8 pm. This is not realistic—sport practices for elementary school children frequently go until 7:30 pm. After school programs are often open until 6:30 PM because many parents can’t get back from work earlier. As such, a bedtime between 7 and 8 is often not realistic. Regarding the high school, the committee must do more to ensure sports teams will be able to meet after school, not before school. Meetings before school defeat the purpose of pushing back school starts.
