I feel more comfortable letting my kids walk around Miami than Western Springs because they have uniform sidewalks, set far from the street and plenty of signals. Walking or Biking around Forest Hills without uniform sidewalks is like taking your life in your hands.

As residents of Forest Hills for over 20 years, we want to see how sidewalks can be a part of our neighborhood. There is an inequality in the forest hills neighborhood and in western Springs itself in the availability of safe walking, running and bike riding. It is time to explore changing this!

If we wait, it could be too late. As a resident on Fair Elms near Forest Hills school, I have seen and been a part of way too many close calls.

Uniform sidewalks throughout Forest Hills are critical for many reasons, including but not limited to (1) universal design and accessibility/inclusion for ALL residents (elderly, those with disabilities, students walking/biking to school, etc.), and (2) the general safety of the members of our community. We need to facilitate access and take care of our neighbors.

I have lived in WS old town for 30 years and feel very fortunate that my children had the safety of sidewalks to go to and from school, friend’s homes and to simply play safely off of streets and driveways. I now have grandchildren in Forest Hills and have feared for their safety as I’ve walked them to and from school. Driving through Forest Hills streets is just as frightening dodging children forced to walk, ride their bikes and play in the streets. This certainly keeps our neighborhood from being handicap accessible nor elderly friendly. Let’s protect our most vulnerable PLEASE! Safety should be provided in all areas of this small, cohesive community. I would encourage WS residents and certainly the village board members to try to take a safe walk, bike ride, stroller ride with young children through the streets of Forest Hills heading towards St Johns or Forest Hills school.

In favor of current program of new builds needing to put in sidewalks, as well as new home buyers needing to cover the costs of installation of new sidewalk in front of their home.

Forest Hills needs sidewalks not only for pedestrians and their safety, but also for the drivers on the roads. No one wants to be on either side of any accident, especially one that can be avoided by providing sidewalks.

We have lived in Western Springs for 33 years and have always considered sidewalks in Forest Hills a critical part of safety and community. We live at 5028 Fair Elms and since the sidewalks around Forest Hills Elem have been installed, the Hello Neighbor waves have created a huge increase in community spirit. Also, having a now adult son in a power wheelchair making his way from his apt in LaGrange to our house, and for seniors wanting to navigate a leisurely walk, the sidewalks have provided a tremendous improvement to safety.

This is not just an aesthetics issue but a major safety issue. No sidewalks and a lack of sufficient streetlights lead to very dangerous pedestrian issues. There are many active families in this area that include young and old alike. Additionally those with physical disabilities should be able to navigate via safe sidewalks instead of in traffic ways.
