Its a ridiculous double standard, my son has had to sit the practical road test 4 times all for arguably non safety technical errors. eg curbing a tire in a parallel park. But he has road knowledge, traffic awareness and coordination. A Chinese national may have a paper license and may have never driven or owned a vehicle. I personally have been side swiped by a chinese national who couldn't maintain his lane next to a concrete motorway median barrier at 80km/hr. Kiwi deaths for Chinese tourist money -disgraceful.

This should be a legal requirement before tourist even get a chance to drive on our roads. I have seen it myself where cars have crossed the centre line or nearly caused a accident. This should of been a legal requirment a long time ago and needs to be put in place asap to avoid anymore losses of loved ones.

Crashes between New Zealand residents and foreign nationals on NZ roads have been occurring for many years, it is time to develop effective long term strategies to eliminate this issue. As well as the licence changes, a 'blackbox' or 'smart phone app' driver technique/ ability real time e-reporting/ logging requirement.

I totally agree, tourists need to do some driving test before they use our roads...so terrible when you hear they have killed someone from their herendous driving.

Never mind the three months. Lets just say that we dont recocnise Chinese drivers' licences.

Longer than 3 months?? I think a proficiency test should be mandatory. And if pulled up by police for dangerous manoeuvres / driving on wrong side of road / obvious incapability, license revoked and car seized, told to take a bus. I'm a motorcyclist too and have met with some unbelievable situations involving tourists, two of them would have taken my life if they happened a second either way.

They should take the test in their own country before they come over here!

Yup we see a lot if crazy stuff. I was told it is easy to get a license in China without knowing how to drive. maybe a simple test and subsequent temp tourist license?

Any foreign driver no matter how long they intend to be in this country should have to sit our driver licensing test!
