I think if any foreign people want to drive on our roads they should take a test before they take a car. Most countries drive on the rights side of the road, Prevent accidents by teaching them how to drive in the left and use our cars.

why let unlicensed drivers from overseas loose on our roads when our own citizens require an extensive testing and licensing of you let one group drive without a licence surely all can drive

Fully agree, they need a sound understanding of our road code in English and also a practical driving assessment. Driving is a privilege not a right.

Personally I think as soon as the get the visa , if they want to drive in New Zealand they should sit their full license , because I bet most of them would fail, and it'll make our roads safer .

Lost a friend last year for this very reason. If I was to go to a foreign country I'd expect to be tested on their road rules before driving anywhere.

I so totally agree they should sit a drivers test . Also they shouldn't be able to sit it with someone of their nationality.

I too have been the victim of a head on collision where a tourist couple were driving on the wrong side of the road. Lucky for me i survived. Something needs to change!

The driving of large camper vans on a car licence also needs to be addressed

After travelling the south island and experiencing daily 'near misses' with tourists, and being second on the scene of an accident involving a tourist, something has to be done. Was the most stressful trip undertaken. I also believe that no NZ licence should be issued to travellers that have less than, say, 12 months driving experience in their own country. From what I understand many obtain their licenses just to drive here and are completely inexperienced drivers.

All foreign drivers (no matter how long they are in the country) who are going to drive any vehicle (hired or borrowed) should be made to sit a driving test on the open road (100kph). They should also face a 24 hour stand down period from when they land. In return I would also happily agree to do this when visiting any other country.
