I am passionate about this Petition having nearly been 'run off the road' at Orere South (in a small Gorge) in 2007, by a tourist from Europe, who had arrived in Auckland early that morning. I KNOW if my husband hadn't been driving & took evasive action we would have had a 'head-on'. I know I would have panicked if I had been driving & the outcome would have been worse. That was the first of a handful of hideous driving experiences involving tourists, when we lived at rural Matingarahi.

This issue needs to be addressed urgently. I have no objection to facing similar tests if and when I want to drive overseas.

why only if they staying for 3 months or more. They should sit a test to prove they can understand NZ road signage before being behind the steering wheel of a car

I wouldnt expect to go to another country and freely drive on their roads, not having learnt the local road rules. I dont want to hurt anyone let alone myself and my loved ones.

I believe all overseas visitors should go thru a test if they are planning to drive in NZ. I've worked around Mt Cook and have had quite a few near misses due to incompetent foreign drivers. They need to understand NZ road laws. I also believe rental companies should have a responsibility in this also. Would you give your own car to a person who has never driven on the open road?

This should also extend to those who come to NZ with an International Licence... Certain countries don't even test applicants for driving ability before issuing International Licences.

They should really be sitting a test if they plan to drive at all! Rental vans/campervans/cars are all dangerous and the driver should be tested before they are allowed to rent any of them.

There must be restrictions placed on foreign drivers in NZ and the government has a duty to protect their citizens.

This is an issue which has needed very obvious attention for a long time.
All drivers on our roads should be expected to perform to NZ standards.
