Yes overseas drivers should be tested. They need to know the law of NZ driving. This could help save a million lives.

My family have had close calls with dangerous driving by foreign drivers. My heart goes out to those who have lost love ones. Its time the government and the rental industry who are reaping the benefits of the tourism boom stepped up with an effective screening and education programme.

It doesn't matter how low the statistic is. If even one of the 25 deaths was preventable then action needs to be taken. Also how many non fatal crashes or near misses happen but go unreported?

Even if we had an annual online exam, 90% pass required to retain your license. Means there would be no excuse for not knowing the rules for Kiwi drivers So many don't bother with the rules or develop their own version of the rules An online exam would be cheap to run & maintain, then maybe every 10 years or so a practical driving test

As having had two near misses with tourists in the holiday season, with my 1year old in the car, it is time the government pass a condition on all holiday makers to go through the basics of our road rules before coming to NZ or upon arrival in NZ. It can earn the country money, if tourists need to pay to be allowed to drive on NZ roads. Foreigners should not be allowed to hire or buy a vehicle until they have been signed off.

All overseas drivers should pass a driver practise test before given the keys, it should be a temp licence card ( different colour to NZ normal cards ) depending on their stay, they should also get T plates put on there car to warn drivers as well. NZ should also do 10 year driving reviews as well to check that drivers can still drive and if they have developed bad habits

at present there is a loophole whereas overseas drivers can drive here for a year and then they go back overseas for a short visit which then allows them to drive further for another 12 months here in nz

Foreign drivers should be required to pass a basic test before they are permitted to drive in NZ & long term stayers a full test
