I personally had couple of near misses with rental cars , both driven by overseas drivers.

All hire companies should also by law have to give out a small (1/3 A$) drivers' guide to NZ, setting out their legal obligations, and explaining a few things about our roads, like how two lanes will without warning become one after you cross traffic light intersections!!

No question about it ... come to our country you had better comprehend our road rules if you expect to drive. No brainer. Would you allow a foreigner to walk around the streets with a weapon they didn't know how to use safely?

This is one of many issues needing to be looked at on our roads.

There's no such thing as "over testing" drivers. A moment of distraction or being unsure - can result in death. There's no reason to be soft on poor driving skills.

It should cover all foreign drivers from Day 1. Often they are trying to see as much of our country at speed in 7-10 days and they pick up rental cars on arrival with little or no rest. My mother was killed by a foreign driver in 1987.

It is for safety of road users and the visitors. Tourists should not be automatically driving on NZ roads. Uber is a safe option around busy cbd roads in all cities. Our roads are never the same as their respective countries. No disrespect to tourists but it about saving lives and safer for them and return home safe. Its a great idea to sit full license if tourists and visitors stay more than 3 months.

I agree with the tests. But I also think there should be regular tests for locals in regards to road etiquette. Theses tests can be fairly simple and done online to tie in with renewing your WOF.

3 months is too long. Most accidents occur soon after arrival. Should be compulsory upon arrival.

Stricter controls are needed for foreign drivers to safely drive on NZ roads.

As the spouse of a Driver Licensing Testing Officer I fear for his safety when he tests these people. TOs know very quickly when someone they are testing doesn't know how to drive at all (despite their 'cereal box' full licenses from their home country). Former TO Bredenbeck was nearly killed when the car he was driver testing in at Te Awamutu was shunted by an overtaking overseas driver - he was hit on the passenger door by a truck who couldn't avoid the spun car. He so nearly died. His career is over. His life will never be the same. The driving standards of countries vary so significantly (some countries have far higher standards than ours) we don't need unskilled drivers on our roads causing mayhem and carnage.

I believe anyone staying in our country should sit a practical driving test and be issued a new Zealand licence. When I wanted to drive in Rarotonga although I had a New Zealand licence and international driving permit I still had to have a Rarotonga licence isuue which was for a six months period. So why can't we same in New Zealand.
