Seeing crazy driving everyday now on the Glenorchy rd, how come my son has to sit a test and drive under restrictions for a year yet foreign drivers can walk in and grab a car with no real restrictions or checking of qualifications !!!!!!!

I would also like to see the vehicle hire companies personally liable for all accidents & injuries. All drivers should be tested before they are allowed on our roads.

My children and I were crashed into whilst indicating to turn right, into our driveway. The foreign driver thought I was indicating for her to pass. It just so happens that 30 metres from our drive way is a blind corner, she was trying to pass into. It also just happens that she was mean't to be supervised whilst driving. She is now heading for the criminal court. Just get these drivers off the roads, we don't need to fear for our lives and our kids lives whilst driving. Health and Safety, the government is doing a very poor job of implementing it on our roads. It is my right to arrive home safe each night, why is the government intent on taking away that right. By the way I live in Queenstown. We are constant avoiding people in cars who don't know the rules, and have no value for other peoples lives. I would like to add to the petition that all GPS's be removed from rental cars. That would mean that tourists would have to then watch the road not the GPS. Thank you for raising this petition. Regards India van der Wilt

It's a no brainer, if you can't pass a test, you shouldn't be on the road. Cars are killing machines in the wrong hands.

Test overseas drivers

Foreign driver testing needs to be undertaken immediately to prevent accidents for both parties and their associated friends and families.

A 3 month stay before an NZ test is too long. Visitors should have to pass a simplified test covering basic road rules before being allowed to drive anywhere at all. That isn't asking too much compared with the threat to other road users some visiting drivers pose.

I support a 24 hours stand down period too, and certainly test before driving on our road.

I also lost a daughter to an overseas driver in November leaving a husband and young family,it was so horrific and heartbreaking for all families.

I think there should be something in place where overseas tourists should pass some form of test to prove that they at least have a basic understanding of NZ road rules before they are allowed to rent and drive a car on NZ roads at all/

I also support the 24 hour stand down period for rental cars driving following a 'long haul' flight.

a 12 or 24 hour stand down period before hiring a rental is something I also support. Three months with an international licences is standard for kiwi's travelling to other commonwealth countries so it should be the same coming here. We can't drive in China so they should be aloud to drive here.

Should be for any foreign drivers no matter how long their stay. Also should be a 'stand down' time before jumping in a rental car off a long haul flight then falling asleep and killing NZers.

I host overseas students, the worst are from China, they arrive here with Chinese licenses that they have purchased!!!! just purchased, no proof of driving needed... they then use this to gain an international license here...

Have recently learned that they don't even have to have an international licence to drive here. Not good enough.

We need to have a process too educate all visitors to NZ that want to drive on our roads
