They should have to pass a test. New Zealanders have to pass a strict test to drive on our roads. It stands to reason that any person from outside NZ should do the same.

We have to sit a test and pass a practical test as well to prove we are capable of driving in our own country. Visitors here need to know how to read every road sign and marking and know how our system operates as well, especially considering the increasing number who have been amply demonstrating that they do not and as a result have caused severe damage and deaths.

Save lives and test foreign drivers. You go to another country their rules apply. They don't ask that the general public to have patience with foreigners! Get real.

outrageous, if this is the attitude NZTA and our government of the day finds acceptable, no New Zealand driver should be charged with a driving offence whether it be speed or accident. Any foreign driver on our roads should displace something on the vehicle to identify them as such, then we can watch out for them.

Plus if I go to China I expect to have to learn Mandarin or Cantonese plus wouldn't be able to buy a house there.

I agree with Mark - To drive a vehcile in NZ must have a NZ or AUS driver licence and maybe could add UK licence as well. After all we don't allow NZers to drive on the roads without a licence.

I had a 100klm head on crash with a German driver on the wrong side of the road. No major injuries. A rental vehicle who was given a new vehicle to continue her trip. Left the country without paying a small fine. All her costs were paid by ACC. All wrong

About time. Zero animosity, just a fact that Kiwis have to train to pass a fairly high standard before we can drive legally. No reason visitors shouldn't.

I'd rather see tourists sit a test 'before' they are given keys to a rental or car they've purchased. We'd all be safer if they'd go back to travelling our country by bus. Those in power seem quite willing to sacrifice dozens of kiwi lives each year in return for the mighty tourist dollars - after all, ACC picks up the tab - all 6 grand of it to 'help' us bury our loved ones!
