To allow anyone from anywhere to drive on our roads without first ensuring that they understand and agree to obey the rules and requirements is simply asking for trouble. Let's make it safe.

New Zealand driving conditions can be very different to those that overseas drivers are familiar with. Anyone getting behind the wheel should be thoroughly versed in these conditions before their road travels begin. The highway is the highway where lives can be lost; it is not a classroom for the overseas inexperienced to hone up on their all too apparent lack of driving knowledge and skill.

I completely agree with this petition. If foreign residents get a visa to live in NZ they should simply have to follow the appropriate rules while they live here.

I have driven behind Asian drivers on highway number 1 and they have been weaving all over the road, crossing the median line. Too dangerous. They don't understand how we drive in NZ and it's very different to their countries.

We need to look at better ways of keeping people safe as possible. It's obvious our present process is not working.

Consider countries like South Korea, where a full licence can be obtained within 1 week (even to expats, or holiday makers from China), and then ported to a NZ license with no theory or test.
