I know in the Cook Islands, when you come from overseas, they make you sit a test to ride a motorbike regardless of what licence you hold from elsewhere and they issue a CI licence. I think this petition is great not because of the social implications such as foreign drivers are a hazard. But its good for the economy. Charging foreigners to sit the test if they wish to drive, if they fail to meet the requirements then there is other forms of transport such as public, taxis and uber. Overall, money will be going into that sector of the economy. However, the losers could be car rentals.

Absolutely support this petition. I've gone to pick up rental cars where the driver clearly states they don't understand our rules of what side of the road to drive on, and still they get given the keys to drive.

Totally agree. Way too many people of foreign origin who have no idea how to drive safely and at the correct speeds are on our roads....

ANYONE coming into Aotearoa that intends to drive on our roads, should be subjected to more stringent rules. Yes, if they are inthe country longer than three months they should be required to sit a full drivers test, AND should only be allowed to do this if they have a FULL drivers licens from there home country on arrival. Don't be coming here with a Learners permit and sitting for a Full lincense when you can't even drive inyour own country. Our lives matter, as does theirs. We want people to have a great, safe experience in N.Z. Please push this legislation through, for all of our best interests.

Design a theory test for the foreigners so they know the basics before driving on our roads li, e which side to drive onand how to indicate around round abouts etc.

It should be mandatory to have a NZ license to drive here anyway, and I would expect the same of other countries as well. I don't drive, but if I did, I would feel safer with a license from wherever I visit...and I'm sure the locals would too!
