We must put NZ life's ahead of our Govt being concerned with upsetting China. If China cancel the ability of NZer's to rent a car in China then good job as no Kiwi in their right mind would drive in China if they were on holiday. How can a student from China get to drive a camper van in NZ but just handing over their credit card. Do people not understand how easy it is to buy a license in China? Something must be done.

The standard of driving from foreign visitors leave a lot to be desired. Let's not see more victims. Time to do something about this.

A theory test should do. As an expat living in China. If I wanted to drive on the roads here I have to sit a theory test. Same should go for them in NZ and other nations that don't recognise the IDP.

I'm a victim of Chinese driving. The Govt. does not want to know about anything that might upset the Chinese.
NZ First. The only way.

I think anyone who wants to drive in NZ, no matter how long they are staying, should prove they are safe to do so.

Couldn't agree more with this, foreign drivers need to understand our road rules entirely before getting on the road.

Absolute disgrace that a foreign driver can drive without the faintest inkling about New Zealand roads or conditions. Minimum regards should be a practical driving test paid for by the driver.

I back this up 100%.A life worths a lot more than a home detention and being so stupid on the road when you know you are not good enough.As a motorcyclist I do not want to get hit buy a dumbs**t like this and get the same thing.Come on NZ have some common sense.do the right thing ..today we lost a young guy who was 100% innocent.it could be me or you tommorow.

Also should apply to anyone coming to live in NZ. A full test, not just 'tick the box' type of questions. I have seen such terrible driving recently. People don't know red lights, roundabouts, but especially mirror signal manoeuvre......NOT the other way round.
