Foreign drivers to sit New Zealand Drivers Licence test

The number of poor driving incidents i witnessed over the holiday break by drivers in rental vehicles was hard to keep record of. Unfortunately most were of Asian origin. They dont bother to understand our road etiquette/rules and dont seem to care. Witnessed a lot of frustration and dangerous actions. Very scary. In a 5 day trip i had to avoid 9 drivers who created dangerous situations....Its just too much.

This is long overdue and the law needs to change. Roads also need upgrade.

This needs to happen as soon as possible!

This should be done in memory of the people who have lost their lives, and the relatives who are grieving for their lost loved ones.

I think this is a brilliant idea ,our roads can be very . narrow long and straight hazardous in some places and the gorges narrow and windy I definently vote yes

I agree tourists should have to sit a test before they can drive here, lives have been lost.

I have experienced a lot of appalling driving near Queenstown from overseas tourists, and during our Christmas holiday my wife and I filmed an Indian tourist spend almost all his time either half or fully on the wrong side of the road around blind corners for over 15 minutes travelling around the lake from Glenorchy to Queenstown. On coming cars were forced to drive on the very edge of or perhaps off the tarseal to avoid collisions. We filmed it, contacted police, they pulled him over and fined him but no appearance in court. For someone who could afford to hire a Porsche Cayenne I imagine the fine was small change. Personally I am surprised he didn't kill someone. Recently during Chinese new year (lots of Chinese tourist visitors) there were plenty of drivers who appeared to have no experience driving on the open road (driving at 60km/hr in a 100km/hr zone), stopping on dotted yellow lines, pulling out onto the wrong side of the road. The list goes on and on. I strongly believe NZ should not have drivers license reciprocity with any country where licensing requirements are lax or where bribes are commonly used to obtain a license (an indian friend of mine admitted bribing someone back home to get his license which he used for his first year in NZ). How many near accidents (deaths?) will it take before NZ changes our driver license reciprocity laws? I fear our love of overseas tourist $ causes the authorities to turn a blind eye.

The driver who comes from oversea must have New Zealand full driving license if they want to drive in New Zealand.

Totally agree ... too many travel on the wrong side, fail to give way and/or stop, wander within their lane, sit to the right hand side of double lanes etc.

Most Asian drivers are dangerous on our roads. I ride a bike and there the ones who are going to kill me.

I have witnessed a lot of bad driving & had a very close call on holiday, with a rental van. Should be compulsory for any tourists to be put through road test and should manage this through rental companies.

about time, lost friends to a foreign driver. keep our roads safe.

Tourists should not being able to get a rental vehicle after long haul flights before a nights sleep - and ultimately they are educated about our roads and have to pass a test prior to ANY DRIVING ON NZ ROADS.

Please make them sit the test. Save Lives

Need to do something to protect everyone on our roads which are often unforgiving.

Marvellous idea. Should have been done years ago. We have enough homegrown incompetents without importing them as well.
