I do not live within the limits of WP but in the county nearby. I own chickens and keep bees (another right that has been repeatedly denied the citizens of WP by the Village Council despite expert support of the Moore County Beekeepers Association.) I believe it is unwise of any government to deny its citizens the right to produce their own food (or to take care of themselves in any manner.) This benefits the community, as well, because most people who do so are very generous and share with their neighbors. In this age of questionable food security, I think governments should encourage this kind of self-sufficiency and sharing among its citizens not deny it due to ignorance. Limits and regulations can be placed but to deny it completely is misguided. And to the argument that "if you want chickens move to the country?" Not everyone can do that (for various reasons) but last time I checked, everyone needs to eat regardless of where they live.

Hens do not need roosters to produce eggs. I support small flocks of backyard chickens as long as they are managed under the village's noise ordinance that would pertain to any animal causing a noise disturbance.

Isn't it about time we be allowed raising 3 or 4 truly organic chickens and their egg production for our family consumption. Other communities around us are doing this without an outcry. Chicken keeping is less a hazard and less of a nuisance than the dozens of golf balls that have sailed into our private property backyard. .MRC

Nope, not kidding! Do some research... chickens are not noisy! You would be happier if your neighbors has chickens for pets instead of dogs :)

I am in favor of backyard chickens in Whispering Pines. My neighbors had them for a year not knowing that they were not allowed in the village. I never heard them or smelled them. I enjoyed the fresh eggs that my neighbor shared with my family. They eat mosquitos and ticks. The benefits of having a small flock of backyard chickens are plenty!
