It is an absolute necessity that one studying computer *science*, learns formal languages, Turing machines, compiler design, algorithms, data structures, complexity theory, microprocessor design, numerical analysis, digital and analogue electronics, operating system fundamentals as well as a specific case study, database management system, graph theory, operational research basics, parallel computing theory, discrete mathematics, computer graphics (2d and 3d), computer networks (including the underlying protocols), and other fundamental subjects, and also at-least one programming language should be learned end to end (recommended a few, but not too many).

This plan is vicious. And even on its own vicious terms, it's bound to backfire: without research in FoCo, the University of Leicester will not be considered a serious institution for research in any area of computer science.

The essential key word is that the bean counters in the higher management levels are "short sighted". This is the most plausible explanation to my mind. But this is nothing new under the sun and too many people did nothing to improve such a state of affairs; so many may be responsible without wanting to acknowledge it.

I'm a full professor of Software Engineering at the University of Salerno, Italy, and I strongly disagree with the plans of the Executive Board of the University of Leicester to largely eliminate research in foundations of computer science. Research in this field has an important impact on AI, Data Science, Computational Intelligence, and Software Engineering, among the others, besides having an important cultural value, which is what a University should promote. I strongly encourage the Executive Board to step back from these plans.

I am signing this petition in solidarity with the students and staff at Leicester university. Were it not for that then I'd not mind Leicester trying their silly plan and learning the hard way why “foundations” of computer science are “fundamental” to the discipline as a whole, and also an integral part of mathematics.

Foundations are vital to every subject - and the trouble is that we don't necessarily know today what global application area the foundational research may be underpinning in the future. Cutting foundations of computing or mathematics is extremely short-sighted. Be clear about your real motivations, because cutting foundations is not a valid motivation here.
