Formal methods and mathematics are core to applied research in computer science (AI, IoT). These academics and researchers are very much needed by UK Universities.

It is sad to see such a short sighted move even being considered. Not only are these research areas incredibly important across CS as a whole, there are also many exciting topics sitting at the intersection of these fundamental areas and topics such as AI, data science and others. As one example of many: the integration of reasoning and learning in AI will depend on knowledge developed in these fundamental areas.

This is a bad move that will not help students in the end to design and build good software systems. They will have a narrow, few technologies-based knowledge and for sure behave in conformance with Maslow's hammer pushing for the technologies they know and not for the best solutions for the users.

Closing a well-established field in favour of a hype is a short-sghted move. The Leicester CS department has an excellent reputation, abandoning it shows a severe lack of understanding of the importance of foundational reasoning. Same for math. It's shameful for any institution calling themselves a university to even consider this.
Build upon your strengths, don't demolish them.
