The "visibility" of AI and data science is mostly buzzword-based, amplified by tech firms such as IBM which profit from them. Many technical directors in the service industry came to me complaining that ML does not hold the promise of the associated mediatic communication. What will your department look like when the buzzword craze blows over, if you remove mathematics and FOCS? If budget obliges, it would be much smarter to resize rather than remove these departments.

Without fundamental mathematics or computer science, there will be no IA algorithms, no computational modelling... no Turing, No Newton, no Darwin... I think it would be best to stop giving the decision power to ignorant managers!

Were the industrial stake-holders even asked? I'd imagine that if they were, they would strongly oppose any move towards stopping research that is "highly theoretical and not directly linked with applications"
