Foundations is what you need to have excellence and innovation.

If you look at the world's leading universities, they all have strong research in foundations of computing. This remains true if you consider only leadership in terms of innovation. Don't amputate your university.

This is a stunningly ignorant, short-termist act of vandalism.

This is the kind of decision you make when you don't understand the foundations of the area the decision is about.

Foundations of Computer Science is one of the most successful fields of research. It is motivated by the desire to understand the capabilities and limitations of computation. It has a major influence over practice in many areas: cryptography (security and privacy), distributed computing (Internet, Radio Networks), data structures, algorithms (routing, compression, matching) , just to name a few. It is also a super-highway to acquiring skills needed for practitioners (programmers, system designers, etc.).

Masaryk University As a researcher at the boundary of theory and some domains of AI, I can attest that achieving results in the latter is conditional on having solid foundations in the former. Also, I believe that having a strong CS fundamentals research output and teaching programme reflects well on the reputation of the institution.

It's very sad to see that the university aiming to be among top research universities in the country is neglecting core topics in modern science and technology. As many of my colleagues said here: While the applications of computer science are playing so important role in modern life, it's very short-sighted to ignore the role of fundamental research underpinning practical applications. As someone who actively works with applied AI, I cannot overstate the importance of research and education in the foundations of CS. Theoretical and foundational development provide the very basis upon which more applied work can be developed, and it is critical that universities continue to foster and support the basic research that continues to makes AI progress possible.

AI produces knowledge without understanding. Only Theory produces understanding. Without Theory we are lost.

Applied maths and as a pure science are equally important for moving forward. US and Canadian universities are a demonstration of this interplay.

highly theoretical research is exactly what makes the whole field advance. Universities should NOT follow market trends, at least not penalizing researches in the core of this field.

This is a very shortsighted change, and needs to be re-thought. Work on foundations is ultimately vital for everything in computer science. Especially to be proposing this for a group that has been so successful in developing a new area (reversibility) is unforgivable!

This is a very short-sighted decision. Fundamental research is critical and underpins practical applications.
